New Building Codes to go into effect on March 9th
On March 9, 2011, the new 2009 Michigan building codes went into effect. Please contact Building Official Carl Studzinski at 231-941-1620 with any questions regarding building codes.
This Department was created to provide the residents of Garfield Township with timely and thorough building inspection services on a local level. We enforce the provisions of the Construction Code Act - Public Act 230. This act was put in place to ensure that a prescribed level of life safety is incorporated into all buildings constructed in the State of Michigan. In Garfield Township this is accomplished by administering and enforcing the provisions of the Michigan Building Code.
The building permit process provides a prescribed measure of life safety, barrier free accessibility, and long term benefits for the future of the built environment in Garfield Township. The permit process includes screening all applications for the required documents, performing an in depth plan review to ensure the plans meet the minimum requirements of the building code, and inspecting the construction to ensure the actual construction meets the code approved plans and specifications.
Rental Unit Inspections:
The Township Building Department wants you to know that if you live in a rental unit and notice an unsafe condition, you may request that the property be inspected. Inspections can be performed on any rental unit, whether it's a single-family home, duplex, apartment buildling, or mobile home. Inspections will only be performed if a written complaint is filed with this office by the tenant. Garfield Township realizes that all renters are entitled to live in housing that is well maintained and safe.
We encourage tenants to report rental properties that require inspection and repair. Tenants can arrange for an inspection (at no cost to them) by calling 941-1620. Owners will be required to pay a $50.00 fee if any violations are found, and may be required to repair units to meet the property maintenance code. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this program, please contact the Building Department.
